For years, my closet was a graveyard of trends. Cold-shoulder tops. Neon everything. Those weirdly distressed jeans that made me look like I’d been attacked by a lawnmower. Every season, I’d buy what the magazines told me to, and every season, I’d wonder why I still had nothing to wear.
The Trend Trap
Trends are designed to expire. The fashion industry needs you to feel like last season’s purchases are already outdated — that’s how they keep you buying. But here’s what I realized: no one outside the fashion industry actually cares if your jeans are from three seasons ago.
What I Do Instead
I focus on pieces that make me feel good — not pieces that are “having a moment.” A well-cut blazer, a soft cashmere sweater, perfectly-fitted dark jeans. These things never go out of style because they were never “in style” — they’re just good clothes.
The Freedom
Not chasing trends has saved me money, closet space, and mental energy. My wardrobe is smaller now but I wear everything in it. Getting dressed is easier. And I’ve never felt more like myself.
